Wellness Wednesday with Crystal Greenwood - We Are All Worthy of Defending

Writer: Crystal GreenwoodCrystal Greenwood

When we think of wellness, something that is often forgotten is self-defense or the ability to defend ourselves in a situation where we feel we are in danger. What is danger? Anything that threatens our physical safety or our psychological safety. This could be as simple as needing to set a boundary or as serious as a life-or-death situation.  Why is it that we overlook this when the statistics show that ONE in THREE women worldwide will experience violence at some point in their life? As women, we were often taught to fall in line, to not make waves, to not be too loud, to put others (family, friends, bosses, etc.) first.

Now is our time – your time!

I want you to enter into the season of YOU this spring—the season of becoming the best version of yourself, and that includes prioritizing your safety.

Step into the season of being a BadAss!

Step ONE – Tell yourself that you are WORTHY!

You deserve to feel safe, strong, and confident in every aspect of your life.

Step TWO – Own that phrase!

Stand tall when you walk, shoulders back, and make eye contact. Move with purpose, like you are on a mission.

Step THREE – Invest in your safety!

Join a local martial arts studio that offers self-defense programs designed for women. If you're in Saskatoon, come check out our Women Empowered Program at Okami Martial Arts. We’re here to help you build confidence, learn practical skills, and discover the power within you.

Why is Self-Defense Important?

Self-defense is not just about physical techniques; it's about reclaiming your sense of safety and autonomy. Learning self-defense can empower you to trust your instincts, set boundaries, and navigate the world with confidence. It helps you feel more in control of your environment and less like a potential target.

The Healing Power of Self-Defense

For many women who have experienced trauma, self-defense training can be a powerful part of their healing journey. Trauma often leaves individuals feeling helpless and disconnected from their bodies. Through self-defense, you can reconnect with your body, reclaim your power, and build resilience. The process of learning to defend yourself can restore a sense of strength and control, helping to heal both mind and body.

Your safety matters. Your wellness matters. YOU matter.

About Me: My name is Crystal Greenwood, and I am the owner of Okami Martial Arts, one of a few female owned martial arts studios in the province. I have been training in martial arts for 14 years and have personally experienced the transformative power of movement and martial arts in my healing journey after surviving sexual assault. Through my trauma training with Wilfred Laurier University and my work with our Women Empowered program, I now help other women find themselves again. My mission is to empower women to reclaim their confidence, strength, and sense of self.

Let this be the year you choose to protect your peace and power.
